Wellness Day

2009-05-12

“Despite 30 mile per hour winds, pea-sized hail, rain and the occasional sun break, 17 vendors from around the community showed up to participate in Rainier’s Annual Wellness Day,” said Suzanne Wolter, Marketing Director for Rainier Fruit.

Designed as a way to educate employees on healthy living practices and local community services, over 300 employees made their way through the fair learning everything from safe canning techniques by the WSU Extension Office Food Preservation Team, to signing up for a library card from the Selah Library.

“I felt the whole thing was really positive. I am touched that they [Rainier] go to the effort for their employees,” said Colleen Chuppe a first year participant from the Yakima Arboretum who already has plans how to improve her booth for next year. (She is thinking of bringing in live ladybugs as way to show a natural alternative to using pesticides.)

Rainier’s in-house medical team also participated by putting together a group of nursing interns to check employee’s blood pressure, blood sugar, height, weight and BMI.

“We lost track of how many employees came by for blood sugar and blood pressure checks, but I know it had to be around 100-110. Most stopped by to check their height and weight. The nursing students were especially excited to be a part of this,” said Lori, Rainier’s on-site Physician Assistant.

Rheannon, a Rainier employee who helped coordinate the fair said, “It turned out wonderful! I heard so many compliments on how we did things this year.”

Rainier’s annual Wellness Day has become a much-anticipated event. With planning already underway for next year, Wellness Day 2010 is sure to be a hit.
